December – Christmas lights and New Year magic

From December 1, Funchal turns into a real winter fairytale – only without frost and snow. The old town streets, promenades, and gardens glow with thousands of lights, forming one of the most spectacular festive illuminations in Europe.

• Christmas markets and exhibitions – throughout December, the city center hosts artisan and gourmet markets. Taste freshly baked bolo do mel (honey cake), enjoy Madeira wine, and shop for unique local crafts. February – the vibrant Madeira Carnival

• February 13 – Children’s and Solidarity Carnival

• February 14 – The Grand Allegorical Parade (Cortejo Alegórico) 
  The highlight of the season! Funchal’s promenade becomes a river of colors and rhythms – hundreds of dancers and dazzlingly dressed groups create a living painting reminiscent of a miniature Rio Carnival. Music, lights, and dance energy take over the whole city, leaving you in the heart of the celebration. Moreover, the carnival celebrations not only captivate with colorful masks and lively music but also offer the opportunity to discover Madeira’s traditional dishes, such as the juicy espetada – meat skewers grilled on oak sticks – and local wine, which can be enjoyed at every festive moment.  

• February 17 – The Slapstick Parade (Cortejo Trapalhão) 
  A day of creative freedom and laughter – anyone can join in, wear humorous costumes, and perform comic sketches. A fun, informal experience that fills the streets with genuine joy and festive energy.
